CPD certificates that issue themselves and check out
Set the CPD hours on a course, and every learner who finishes it, or attends enough of a live session, gets a numbered certificate with a link anyone can use to check it is genuine. No spreadsheets, no mail-merge.
Every certificate carries a unique number and a verification link that shows the learner's name, title, dates, CPD hours and whether it is still valid.
- CPD hours on every certificate
- Issued on completion or attendance
- Expiry reminders before renewal
What is CPD certificate software?
CPD certificate software issues a certificate that records the CPD hours a learner earned, and lets anyone check that it is genuine. In Continuum Learn, certificates are issued automatically when a learner completes a course or attends enough of a live session, and each one carries its CPD hours, a unique number and a verification link.
You set CPD hours, a certificate template and an optional validity period on each course. When a learner completes the course, or for in-person courses is marked as attending, the certificate is created, numbered and frozen: editing the template later never changes one that has been issued. A public verification page shows the learner's name, the title, the dates, the CPD hours, the number and whether it is Valid or Expired. It shows nothing else. If you set a validity period, the learner is emailed 30 days before it expires.
What goes on a CPD certificate? A good one has: the learner's name ({learner_name}); the course or event title ({title}); the date it was completed ({award_date}); the CPD hours or points ({cpd_hours}); the provider's name and logo ({team_name} and up to three logos); the accrediting body's mark, if you are accredited; a unique certificate number ({certificate_number}); a signatory (up to two); an expiry or renewal date where relevant ({expiry_date}); and a way to verify it, which is printed on the PDF as a link. Continuum does not accredit CPD: accreditation comes from bodies such as the CPD Certification Service or the CPD Standards Office, and you add their logo to your template.
Two limits to know about. Certificates come from completions and attendance on Continuum, so you cannot issue one for training delivered elsewhere, and learners cannot yet log CPD done outside the platform. That is on our roadmap. For several courses that earn one certificate, see programme certificates, and for the live side see the live training platform.
Certificates are numbered, frozen at issue and checkable by anyone with the link, whichever device they use

CPD hours on every course
Set the CPD hours, the certificate template and the validity period on the course itself.
Preview the real certificate
A live preview shows the learner's name, title, date, CPD hours, validity and signatories before anyone is awarded one.
An expired certificate says so
Once the validity period has passed, the verification page shows the certificate as Expired, with the dates and CPD hours still visible.
A valid certificate anyone can check
Each certificate prints a verification link. The page shows the name, title, dates, CPD hours and number, and whether it is Valid.
Why issue CPD certificates from the training itself
When the certificate comes from the completion record, there is nothing to key in and nothing to dispute.
No manual issuing
A certificate is created the moment a learner completes the course or is marked as attending. Nobody exports a list or runs a mail-merge.
Verifiable by employers and regulators
Each certificate prints a verification link. The page confirms name, title, dates, CPD hours and number, and says whether it is Valid or Expired.
Renewals do not slip
Set a validity period in months and the expiry date is worked out from the award date. Learners get an email 30 days before it ends.
Old certificates never change
The template, wording, language and values are frozen at issue, so a later edit never rewrites a certificate someone already holds.
Who issues CPD certificates this way
Membership bodies
Give members a CPD certificate for every course they complete, with the hours printed and a link their employer can check. See <a href="/member-training-lms">member training LMS</a>.
Training providers selling CPD courses
Add your accreditor's logo to the template, set the hours per course and let certificates issue as learners finish.
Webinar and conference CPD
Put the live session in a course with a Live Lesson block that requires a share of attendance, so the certificate follows attendance, not just sign-up.
CPD certificate features in Continuum Learn
Everything below is in the product today
CPD hours per course
Enter the CPD hours on each course. They print on the certificate through the merge field and are shown to the learner.
Templates and merge fields
Two layouts, background artwork, up to two signatories and three logos. Merge fields cover the learner's name, title, date, number, CPD hours, expiry date and team name.
Live preview of the real PDF
Check the wording and layout against the real certificate before anyone is awarded one.
Automatic issue on completion
A numbered certificate is recorded as soon as the learner completes the course, and the date is the completion date.
Attendance-gated CPD for live sessions
A Live Lesson block can require a percentage of the session to be watched before the lesson completes. Zoom sessions can complete on joining or on minutes attended.
In-person attendance gating
For in-person courses the certificate waits until someone marks the learner as attended.
Unique numbers and public verification
Numbers look like CL-{team}-{ULID}. Verification is switched on per template and the page is hidden from search engines.
Validity and expiry reminders
Set a validity period in months and learners are emailed 30 days before the certificate expires.
Certificates in the learner's language
Wording can be written per language and each certificate is issued in the learner's own language. See <a href="/welsh-language-lms">Welsh language LMS</a>.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best way to issue CPD certificates online?
The least work is to issue them from the training itself. In Continuum Learn you set CPD hours and a certificate template on the course, and a numbered certificate is created automatically when the learner completes it. If your training runs elsewhere, a standalone certificate tool that accepts a list of names is the better fit, as Continuum only issues certificates for training delivered on the platform.
What should a CPD certificate include?
The learner's name, the course or event title, the completion date, the CPD hours or points, the provider's name and logo, the accrediting body's mark if you have one, a unique certificate number, a signatory, an expiry or renewal date where relevant, and a way to verify it. Each of these maps to a merge field or logo slot in the Continuum template editor.
How can an employer check a CPD certificate is genuine?
Turn on public verification in the certificate template and each certificate prints a verification link. The page shows the learner's name, the title, the award and expiry dates, the CPD hours, the certificate number and whether it is Valid or Expired. It shows nothing else and is hidden from search engines.
Can I issue CPD certificates for webinars or live sessions?
Yes, when the session sits inside a course. A Live Lesson block can require a percentage of attendance before the lesson completes, and completing the course issues the certificate. A webinar run as a standalone event outside any course does not issue a certificate, so embed the event in a course if you want one. See LMS with live streaming.
Can certificates show CPD hours and an expiry date?
Yes. Set CPD hours and a validity period in months on any course. The hours print through the {cpd_hours} merge field, the expiry date is calculated from the award date and printed through {expiry_date}, and learners get an email 30 days before the certificate expires.
Does Continuum Learn accredit CPD?
No. Accreditation comes from bodies such as the CPD Certification Service or the CPD Standards Office, and you apply to them for your courses. Continuum prints the hours you set and lets you add an accreditor's logo to the template, where you have their permission.
Can learners log CPD they did elsewhere?
Not yet. Learners can see the certificates and CPD hours they earn on Continuum. Logging CPD from other sources is on our roadmap, and we do not give a date.
Can I issue certificates for training I ran outside Continuum?
Not today. Certificates are created from completions and attendance recorded on the platform, and there is no bulk or API issue. For that case we would suggest a standalone certificate tool. For several courses that earn one certificate, see programme certificates.
